March 10, 2006- Disaster Recovery and Preparedness

To help the victims of the recent rains, floods and mudslides, I signed an emergency proclamation to help speed relief and recovery.

It activates programs to make personal and commercial loans available to people whose homes, businesses or farms sustained damage, and it enables National Guard troops to assist in the removal of debris.

I’m proud of how our state civil defense and other departments are working collaboratively to coordinate recovery efforts.

This natural disaster reinforces our Administration’s commitment to ensure our state is prepared for future emergencies.

We have proposed a comprehensive preparedness package to modernize our warning systems and stockpile supplies.  We also want to create additional shelters with special areas for those needing medical care and where people can bring their pets.

These proposals will help ensure we are prepared for the next disaster.

Mahalo. This is Governor Linda Lingle.
