Aloha,
Thanks to the collaborative effort between Hawai`i’s public and private sectors, the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard was not added to a list of bases being considered for possible closure.
Together, our state made a compelling argument in Washington, D.C. on the strategic military value of the shipyard in ensuring the long-term security of our nation.
The dedicated men and women who are employed at the shipyard should take great pride in the work they do and the role they play in maintaining peace and security in the Asia-Pacific region.
Beyond Pearl Harbor’s military value, the shipyard employs over forty-three hundred residents and is important to Hawai`i’s continued economic vitality.
The decision by the BRAC Commission to spare Pearl Harbor is a wake up call for our community.
We must continue to work together to find ways to improve the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and invest more in its future.
Mahalo. This is Governor Linda Lingle.
