Developing International Partnerships Through Robotics

Waiakea High School student robotics participants are developing relationships with students from fifteen nations around the globe at the Ritsumekian Senior High School "Rits Super Science Fair 2009." With science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) at the core of this gathering, the fair provides Hawai`i students with an opportunity to share knowledge while building ties to other countries.

Encouraging Travel to Hawai`i

During meetings in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, the Governor focused on maximizing opportunities for Chinese tourists to travel to Hawai`i. Her discussions with key Chinese and U.S. officials centered on two critical areas – expediting the application process for Chinese visitors traveling to the U.S. and preparing for the first nonstop scheduled airline service from China to Hawai`i, which is expected to begin early next year.

Governor Releases $75M for Public Schools Statewide

Governor Lingle released $75 million to the Department of Education for capital improvements at public schools statewide. The funds were appropriated by the Legislature this past legislative session for building and campus facility improvements, repairs and maintenance at Hawai`i public schools.

$203 Million to Improve UH Campuses Statewide

Governor Lingle released over the last quarter over $200 million for renovations and new construction at University of Hawai`i campuses statewide. The projects include improvements to the Campus Center at University of Hawai`i at Manoa and the Student Services Building at UH-Hilo, a new Hawaiian Language building at UH-Hilo, and a new Cancer Research Center at the UH School of Medicine in Kaka`ako.

The State Department of Health (DOH) has begun a statewide program to administer the 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine to Hawai`i's schoolchildren. Thousands of Hawai`i elementary and middle school students whose parents signed and returned consent forms will receive their free H1N1 flu vaccine through this program.

New Cargo Facility at Hilo International Airport Breaks Ground

State Department of Transportation (DOT) officials broke ground this month on a new Hold Cargo and Light Industrial Building at Hilo International Airport. The new 60,000 square-foot, steel-framed cargo building will be used to accommodate the delivery and transport of goods into Hilo.
