Center for Okinawan Studies Opens
Governor Lingle celebrated the launch of the nation's first Center for Okinawan Studies, which opened this week as part of the University of Hawai`i's School of Pacific and Asian Studies.
Governor Lingle, University of Hawai`i Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw and Dean Edward Shultz observe a traditional Okinawan dance.
"The center is a positive development for our state," said Governor Lingle. "It shows respect and value for our local Okinawan culture, reflects the multicultural diversity of our islands, and creates a platform for global connections to grow."
The Governor shared that as island states, Hawai`i and Okinawa share many similarities, especially the realization that with limited land and natural resources, both must focus on innovation as the main engine of their respective economies.
"The global economy is rapidly changing to a sophisticated, technology-based model where innovation is key," she said.
To this end, the Lingle-Aiona Administration has made increasing global connections a top priority.
"One of the keys to bolstering innovation in Hawai`i is forming strong connections with our Asia-Pacific neighbors," said Governor Lingle, adding that linking Hawai`i's students, organizations and businesses through international exchanges and programs will not only diversify Hawai`i's economy, but will also increase the quality of life.
