State of Hawai`i Governor's Update for the Week of August 23-28, 2009

State Pursues Additional Spending Reductions

Following the Council on Revenues' reduced revenue projection this week, Governor Lingle announced that she will hold an emergency meeting with her cabinet directors over the weekend to identify additional spending reductions needed to close the growing budget shortfall. The reductions will likely include additional layoffs in order to realize labor savings.

Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit & Expo Next Week

Starting Monday, the State of Hawai`i, in cooperation with the Defense Energy Support Center and the U.S. Pacific Command, will host the Asia-Pacific Clean Energy Summit and Expo. Governor Lingle will deliver remarks during the summit, which will focus on various renewable energy initiatives and policies.

Governor, Hawai`i Residents Welcome Home Soldiers

Soldiers from the Hawai`i Army National Guard's 29th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) returned home last week following an eight-month deployment to Kuwait and Iraq. Governor Lingle, commander-in-chief of the Hawai`i National Guard, was on hand to welcome two planes of arriving soldiers.

45 Jobs Supported by Federal Stimulus Funds

The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR), Division of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW) was awarded federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds from the Corporation for National and Community Service to support a one-year State of Hawai`i Recovery Youth Conservation Corps Program.
