State of Hawai`i Governor's Update for the Week of June 21-27, 2008

LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

This week, Governor Linda Lingle submitted to the Legislature a list of 52 bills she is considering for potential vetoes. The Governor also signed a bill that makes Hawai`i the first state in the nation to require the installation of solar water heating systems on new single-family homes as well as a bill that will allow the state to move forward on critical improvements to the State's harbors as part of the Harbors Modernization Plan.

Transportation

To encourage more O`ahu commuters to carpool and reduce traffic congestion, the department will change the minimum ridership requirement for the H-1 Freeway ZipperLane and the Nimitz Highway Contraflow Lane.

 

Governor Welcomes
Chinese Visitors to Hawai`i

As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's efforts to expand Hawai`i's role in the global economy, Governor Lingle welcomed a delegation of Chinese visitors from Beijing, Guangdong Province and Tianjin to Hawai`i.

Honoring Coach Ginoza

At a dinner to raise funds for the Larry Ginoza Athletic Complex, Governor Lingle recognized Wai`anae High School Athletic Director Larry Ginoza, who is retiring after 20 years of service to the school and Leeward Coast community.

 Weekly Radio Address

"Robotics, in its purest form, is a fun and exciting way for Hawai`i's students to apply science, technology, engineering and math, or STEM, skills. On Wednesday, July 2nd, from 10:30 a.m. to noon, in the State Capitol rotunda, Hawai`i's six robotics programs will be showcased for educators, legislators, business leaders, students, parents and the public."
