Days after the earthquake, two Hawai`i-based C-17 cargo jets flew into China carrying tens of thousands of pounds of relief supplies including generators, food, tents, water, and water-purification equipment provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

In addition, Admiral Timothy Keating, commander, United States Pacific Command, reported this week that two additional military planes arrived in China, transporting members of a Los Angeles Fire Department urban rescue team and delivering much-needed tents.

"Principally, there are millions of folks who are without shelter, so one of the things that the Chinese tell us they need is tents," Admiral Keating explained in a briefing at the Pentagon.
