Mahalo for your Service - Navy
A team of sailors from Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard have been working with 7 Hawai`i robotics teams in advance of the Inaugural BAE / NASA FIRST in Hawai`i Regional Robotics Competition.
"We're hoping to train and groom students to become engineers at the shipyard," said Cryptologic Technician Technical Chief Carnelius Mitchell, who helped place volunteer sailors with schools in need of assistance. He added that the shipyard hopes to cultivate technical skills in the students so they will remain in Hawai`i after graduating.
In all, twenty sailors have shared their machinery, welding and electronic skills with teams from Punahou School, Nanakuli High School, Campbell High School, Radford High School, Kamehameha Schools - Kapalama Campus, Farrington High School, and Sacred Hearts Academy.
"The specialized skills provided by the Navy have been essential in putting together our robot," said Hugh Mosher, a Punahou teacher and robotics parent. "The sailors have equipment that we do not have in house, and the skills to do things in the right way."
