Multinational Naval Exercise Concludes
Highlighting Hawai`i's strategic location at the "Crossroads of the Pacific," Governor Lingle joined military leaders from the United States and nine nations around the world in celebrating the conclusion of a successful multinational joint exercise that promoted and strengthened international relationships.
Governor Lingle and Vice Admiral Samuel Locklear, commander, U.S. Third Fleet, congratulate military leaders from 10 nations for their participation in RIMPAC.
The Governor congratulated the U.S. Navy and participating nations (Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, the Republic of Korea, Singapore and the United Kingdom) for completing the largest maritime exercise in the world, which brought together 20,000 sailors, airmen, Marines, soldiers and Coastguardsmen.
"RIMPAC is more than just an exercise," she said. "It increases multinational cooperation, builds trust and confidence in each other's abilities, tests critical war-fighting skills and overcomes challenge of different languages, terminologies and procedures."
The RIMPAC exercise demonstrated the U.S Navy's commitment to working with its global partners to protect maritime freedom and ensure stability throughout the Pacific Rim. Forces included 20 U.S. Navy ships, 13 foreign ships, two Coast Guard vessels, three U.S. submarines, three foreign submarines, more than 150 U.S. and foreign aircraft, 18 other U.S. Navy and Marine Corps units and 11 foreign units.
