Governor Lingle recognized the important contributions of public accountants to the State of Hawai`i and highlighted their daily work to protect public interest.

"We've seen the negative consequences unethical business practices can have on families, schools, businesses and even the global economy," she said.  "The need for personal integrity has never been stronger and I appreciate honorees for setting a positive example."

Kawafuchi was honored for his work to manage all aspects of tax administration for the state, including audits, collections, criminal tax investigations, legislation, administrative guidance, operations, taxpayer services and research and planning.

Under Kawafuchi's leadership, the Department of Taxation has increased collection of delinquent taxes, bringing in additional $306 million between 2003-2007.

He has also implemented innovative ways to ensure everyone pays their fair share so the state can provide needed services, including a one-stop service for taxpayers to conduct business with the State.
